Career Resolutions Made Easy: Make 2025 the Year You Love Your Career

2025 is literally hours away, how did that happen, right? I don’t know about you but I’ve racked up an impressive amount of new year resolutions over the years, some more successful than others. What about you, do you have a list of resolutions you want to make? Maybe one of those resolutions sounds something like, “I want to find a job I love,” or “I need to finally switch careers.” Sound familiar?

Here’s the thing about career resolutions: they’re exciting to set, but if you’re not careful, they can quickly become overwhelming and disappointing. Why? Because vague goals like “find my dream job” or “make a change” lack the clarity and structure needed to turn them into real, actionable steps.

But don’t worry—I’ve got you. I went down the road of vague wishes myself a few too many times and I learned a thing or two. So, learn from my mistakes and let’s make this the year you not only set career goals but actually achieve them.

Why Career Resolutions Fail

Let’s get real for a second. How many times have you set a resolution on January 1st, only to forget all about it by February? (gym membership anyone?) It’s not because you’re lazy or unmotivated—it’s because resolutions without a plan are just wishes. Sure, wishes sometimes do come trye, but almost certainly not, if they only remain a wish with no action behind them.

The three biggest reasons career resolutions fail are:
1️⃣ They’re too vague. Saying, “I want a job I love” is like saying, “I want to go somewhere cool.” Without specifics, you’re going nowhere fast.
2️⃣ There’s no plan. Even the best intentions need a roadmap to succeed.
3️⃣ Fear takes over. Let’s face it—making bold moves is scary. It’s easier to stay in the comfort zone, even when it’s not serving you.

How to Make Career Resolutions Easy

The good news? You don’t have to let fear or lack of clarity hold you back. Here’s how to turn those big career dreams into actionable steps:

You need some concrete steps to turn those wishes into reality, otherwise they just drift in the wind

1️⃣ Clarify Your Vision
What does “loving your career” actually mean for you? Is it switching to a new field, starting your own business, stepping into leadership, or simply changing up how you work? Spend time getting specific about what you want—and why you want it. Never neglect your WHY - the how is so much easier once you know why.

2️⃣ Break It Down
Big goals can feel overwhelming, but breaking them into smaller steps makes them manageable. Start small: update your resume, reach out to a mentor, or schedule one informational interview. Progress, not perfection, is the goal here.

3️⃣ Get Support
You don’t have to do this alone. One of the best ways to stay on track is to work with a coach who can help you create a roadmap, hold you accountable, and give you the confidence to tackle the hard stuff. Coaching is like having a personal cheerleader and strategist rolled into one—it’s a game-changer. And sure, I’m totally biased on this but not just because I am a coach and I believe in my ability to get my clients what they want, but because using a coach was exactly the huge game changer for me I needed. I spent a lot of time spinning my wheels, wishing for more, for different, talking myself out of it, you name it, and I got absolutely nowhere. Nowhere until i hired a coach and at the end of one session, just one session I could not believe the clarity and purpose I gained. It was a magical transformation for me.
